Annual grass 15-45cm tall. Leaves with a woolly sheath at the base. Ligule a membrane without a fringe of hairs. Leaves 2-8cm long, to 2mm wide, threadlike, flat, rolled, or the edges rolled inwards, surface rough. Spikelets 2-4mm long, often purplish. Mature seed group spreading. Seeds with one short awn.
