Perennial grass 40cm-1.3m tall. Leaves with a rough or hairless sheath at the base. Ligule a membrane without a fringe of hairs. Leaves 5-30cm long, 1-3.5mm wide, flat or the edges rolled inwards, hairless to rough. Spikelets green, 10-16mm long. Mature seed groups cylindrical. Seeds each with one awn, in groups of 4-7.
