Annual or perennial grass 20cm-1.3m tall. Leaves with a hairless or rough sheath at the base. Ligule a fringe of hairs. Leaves 10-25cm long, 1-4mm wide, threadlike, linear, rolled, flat, or folded lengthwise, hairless, or rough on the upper surface, . Spikelets purplish to straw-coloured, 12-25mm long, grain 4-8mm long. Mature seed groups cylindrical. Seeds with 3 awns. Vulnerable Vic.
