Perennial grass to 1m tall.  Leaves with a smooth or rough sheath at the base.  Ligule a membrane without a fringe of hairs.  Leaves to 20cm long, 1-6mm wide, flat, or with the edges curved or rolled inwards, hairless to hairy or rough.  Spikelets green, brown or black, 7-12mm long, excluding the awn.  Mature seed groups spreading. Seeds with one long awn
