Introduced annual grass 5-60cm tall.  Leaves with a hairy sheath at the base. Ligule a lacerated membrane without a fringe of hairs. Leaves flat, 1.7-12cm long, 2-6mm wide, hairless to hairy or rough, tapering to a point.  Spikelets purple or red, 6-30mm long excluding the awns.  Mature seed groups oval to short cylindrical to spreading. Seeds with one long awn, in groups of 3-8.
