Introduced annual grass to 60cm tall. Leaves with a hairy sheath at the base, ligule a lacerated membrane without a fringe of hairs. Leaf blades flat, 2-16cm long, 1.5-4mm wide, hairy, finely pointed. Spikelets nodding, 10-25mm long. Seeds with 1 awn, in groups of 1-8. Inflorescence green or purplish, an open or tight panicle at the tops of the flowering stems.
