Shrub to 2m tall. Leaves opposite each other, with sheathing stipules, mostly 1.2-5cm long, 10-25mm wide, hairless or the upper surface and margins rough, tips with a small point. Male and female flowers on different plants. Flowers bell-shaped, with 4-6 lobes, cream to pinkish, at the bases of the leaves or the tops of the stems, male flowers in dense clusters, female flowers in groups of 3. Ripe fruit red.

Native to the ranges and western slopes, well east of the area covered by this key.
