Perennial grass to 80cm tall. Leaves with a hairy or hairless sheath at the base. Ligule a membrane without a fringe of hairs. Leaves 5-40cm long, 2-4mm wide, flat or the edges rolled in, glaucous, margins rough. Spikelets 25-50mm long. Seeds with 1 awn, in groups of 4-8. Mature seed groups cylindrical. Poorly known Vic (as Elymus scaber var. plurinervis).

Differs from Elymus scaber in that the awns on the seeds are uniformly curved backwards when dry.
