Annual or perennial grass to 1.5m tall. Leaves with a sheath at the base. Ligule a membrane without a fringe of hairs. Leaves 14-55cm long, 1-5mm wide, flat, rolled, or folded together lengthwise, rolled inwards when dry, rough, with a long point. Spikelets green to purplish, 5-18mm long. Seeds sometimes with one short awn, in groups of 6-14. Mature seed groups spreading.  Diplachne fusca in NSW. Rare Vic (as Leptochloa fusca ssp. fusca).
