Perennial sedge to 5m tall, occasionally to 5m. Leaves reduced to sheaths, rarely the uppermost leaf with a blade to 10cm long. Spikelets oval, reddish brown to brown, 5-13mm long, 4-5mm diameter, with 0 petalsInflorescence an open group, with 1-4 spikelets per branch, at the top of the flower stem, with a rigid bract subtending the inflorescence. Grows in water. Schoenoplectus validus in NSW and SA.
