Introduced annual or short-lived perennial forb to 50cm tall or sprawling. Leaves succulent, alternating up the stems, flat to flattened cylindrical, 0.5-2cm long, 1-1.5mm wide, glaucous to grey-green, hairless, with transparent margins and pointed tips. Flowers small (less than 3mm across), with 5 succulent reddish perianth segments, in clusters or panicles arising from the bases of the leaves. Fruit to 3.5mm diameter, 5-lobed, succulent, reddish.

Differs from Suaeda australis in that the leaves have transparent margins.
