Only pterygote Insecta have wings or wing buds.  The forewings are converted to sclerotised elytra in beetles, and the hind wings to club-shaped halteres in flies.  Thrips, and some minute wasps and beetles, have distinctive wings composed of a median rod-like process fringed with long setae (bristle wings).  Some oribatid mites (Sarcoptiformes) have wing-like lateral processes that protect the legs (pteromorphs).
