Stagnicola palustris (Müller, 1774)

Diagnostic features

The tall spire and lack of inflation of the last whorl are features not seen in any other lymnaeid in Australia. This species sometimes has irregular spiral threads or wrinkles.

Type locality: Europe.

Synonyms: Limnaea tasmanica Tenison Woods, 1876 and many others (see http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=181582).

Biology and ecology

Very little is known about this species in Australia. It is a host for some parasites including one that causes cercerial dermatitis in humans and is also a host for Fasciola hepatica.

Distribution

Known from a few localities in Victoria, and the type of L. victoriae is from Bainsdale. Otherwise the species naturally occurs in Europe. A North American species S. elodes (Say, 1821) may be a synonym of S. palustris.

Notes

This is a new record for S. palustris in Australia.
