Hawaii A chain of 132 volcanic islands in the North Pacific Ocean. All but the seven main Hawaiian Islands are uninhabited. Tropical climate.


Polynesia Series of coral atolls and islands in the South Pacific Ocean, consisting of French Polynesia, Kiribati, Fiji, Tonga, Vanuatu, Fiji, and Samoa. Tropical climate.


Micronesia Mountainous islands to coral atolls in the North Pacific Ocean, consisting of the Palau, Federated State of Micronesia, Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, and Marshall Islands. Tropical climate.


New Zealand Islands in the South Pacific Ocean, southeast of Australia. Temperate climate.


Japan Island chain between the North Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan, east of the Korean Peninsula. Climate varies from tropical in south to cool temperate in the north .


China China is located in central Asia. Because of its size and extensive topography range, the climate is highly variable. Most of the production of taro is confined to the warmer southern and coastal parts of the country.


Caribbean The islands of the Caribbean are located between North and South America. The islands largely fall within the tropical climate zone, and experience warm, humid conditions.


Hybrid Hybrid taro are genetic combinations of different taro varieties. In order to increase disease resistance and improve crop yields, scientists have been creating hybrids between Hawaiian varieties and those from Polynesia and Micronesia.


Unknown The locality of the taro variety is unknown at the time of release of the key. This feature should only be selected if the user wishes to know which varieties have no known origin.
