Empodium
Uncinate means having a hook. Pad-like refers more to the absence of a hook, than to a pad-like appearance, since a profusion of tenent hairs often obscures the empodial base. Spider mites that have empodia with tenent hairs belong to the Subfamily Bryobiinae. The three tribes of Bryobiinae can be separated by the characteristics of the pretarsal claws and empodia:
True claws uncinate + empodia pad-like = Bryobiini
True claws pad-like + empodia pad-like = Hystrichonychini
True claws pad-like + empodia uncinate = Petrobiini
