Shrub or tree to 5m or more tall. Older branches leafless. Younger branches with 2 soft deciduous spines at the bases of the leaves. Leaves alternating up the stems, 0.5-1.5cm long, linear to narrow and flat, hairy. Male and female flowers on separate plants. Flowers fragrant, with 2 or 4 greenish white, cream, or yellow, petals, borne singly or in clusters at the bases of the leaves if present, along the stems, or on short side branchlets. Fruit purple or black when ripe.
