Introduced annual or short-lived perennial grass to 1.5m tall. Leaves with a hairy sheath at the base. Ligule a membrane without a fringe of hairs. Leaves flat, 10-45cm long, 3-15mm wide, slightly hairy, the edges rough, with a long drawn out point. Spikelets green to purplish green, 15-40mm long excluding the awns. Inflorescence spreading. Seeds with 0 or 1 awn 1-9mm long.
