Perennial forb to 45cm tall. Leaves mostly at the base of the plant, 0.5-18cm long, 7-40mm wide, flat, rough to hairy, edges lobed, toothed, or lobed and toothed. Upper stem leaves alternating up the stems, somewhat stem-clasping, 2-10mm wide, flat, rough to hairy, entire or toothed. Flower heads with 15-65 white or mauve 'petals' and yellow centres. Flowers single, or many in open groups, at the tops of the stems. Burrs hairless or hairy, with 5-6 longer spines 1-4mm long, often with several additional spines to 1mm long which are sometimes obscured by long woolly hairs.
