Annual or perennial forb to 1m tall. Leaves at the base of the plant and alternating up the stems, 2-25cm long, 8-40mm wide, flat, hairy, pointed, upper leaves with wavy edges. Basal leaves with a sheath at the base. Flowers blue, pink, or whitish, funnel-shaped, with 5 lobes, borne along one side of narrow well-spaced racemes at the tops of the stems. Burr hairless, with many barbed spines.
