Tree to 35m tall. Bark smooth, sometimes orange. Leaves alternating up the stems, 8-17cm long, 12-35mm wide, flat, glossy green, hairless, with pointed tips. Flowers white, with 0 petals, in clusters of 4-16 at the bases of the leaves. Bud caps much shorter than the base. Buds often with longitudinal lines, nuts smooth to ribbed. Nut valves not very noticeable.
