Perennial grass 40cm-1.65m tall or mat-forming. Leaves with hairless or hairy leaf sheaths. Ligule a jagged membrane without a fringe of hairs, or a membrane with a fringe of hairs. Leaves 3-30cm long, 2-6mm wide, flat, hairless or sparsely hairy, tapering to a long fine point. Spikelets reddish brown, 3-5mm long. Mature seed groups cylindrical, 2-4 arising from a common point, the whole somewhat spreading. Seeds with one long awn, in pairs.
