Annual or short-lived perennial forb to 50cm tall. Stems somewhat fleshy. Leaves alternating up the lower stems, almost opposite each other above, 1-3cm long, 3-10mm wide, flat, hairless, margins entire or slightly toothed, tips blunt. Male and female flowers on the same plant. Flowers with 0 petals, green, with 4 yellow glands. Flowers small (less than 3mm across, in small heads that look like a single flower, each head composed of 5 bundles of male flowers surrounding 1 female flower, at the bases of the leaves or at the ends of short branches.
