Perennial forb to 30cm tall, with annual stems araising from underground 'roots'. Leaves alternating up the stems, sometimes opposite each other near the base. Leaves 2-5cm long, 5-15mm wide, flat, rough with hooked hairs, rarely hairless, margins entire to toothed or lobed. with pointed tips. Flowers small (less than 3mm across), red to green, with 4 petals, solitary or in clusters of 3-5 subtended by leaflike bracts, in 'leafy' 'racemes' at the tops of the stems,.
