Perennial grass to 1.5m tall, forming large tussocks. Leaves with a hairy or hairless sheath at the base. Ligule a membrane with a fringe of hairs. Leaves 7-50cm long, 2.5-12mm wide, flat, folded lengthwise, or with the edges rolled in, hairless or hairy, with rough edges, tapering to a fine point. Spikelets pale green or purplish, 2-4mm long. Seeds with 0 bristles. Mature seed groups spreading.
