Distinguishing features

Female macropterous, mainly brown but pronotum and mesonotum sharply pale, also tarsi and posterolateral areas of tergites II–VII; antennal segment II dark brown, segments I and III–IX uniformly light brown; fore wing uniformly lightly shaded except for anterior two-thirds at base, clavus pale with apex brown. Head with weak irregular sculpture lines, ocellar setae III minute on anterolateral margins of triangle. Antennae 9-segmented; suture on VI not fully complete, sense cone arising on basal third of segment; sense cones on III and IV small and slender. Pronotum with irregular transverse reticles with flattened marginal ridges but no markings within reticles. Metanotal reticulation longitudinal, median setae minute. Fore wing typical of genus, major setae no longer than microtrichia, anteromarginal cilia arising ventrally well behind margin. Tergites III–VII posterolaterally with short longitudinal sculpture lines, VIII with short marginal comb, IX with many discal microtrichia on posterior third.
Male not known.

Related species

D. victoriae has the ocellar region of the head with unusual weak and iregular sculpture lines, the antennae 9-segmented, and the fore wing almost uniformly light brown. The Old World genus Dendrothrips currently includes 56 described species, mainly from Africa and Asia. The metathoric endofurca is greatly enlarged, "lyre-shaped", extending into the mesothorax, the sides of the metathorax are greatly swollen, the hind coxae are wider than long, the fore wing cilia arise ventrally well behind the anterior margin, and the apex of the fore wing is recurved without a prominent terminal seta. The form of the wing apex distinguishes the members of this genus from the other species placed in the Dendrothripinae.

Biological data

Known from a single female collected from a species of Daviesia [Fabaceae].

Distribution data

The only known specimen was taken near Bendigo, Victoria.
