Generic diagnosis

Female macropterous. Head strongly constricted behind eyes, prolonged in front of eyes, cheeks rounded; mouth-cone pointed, maxillary palps 3-segmented; eyes large; with five weakly pigmented facets; ocellar setae I absent, setae III long and within triangle; three pairs of small postocular setae. Antennae 8-segmented, segment I with paired dorso-apical setae, III with sense-cone simple, IV with sense-cone simple or forked, III–VI with microtrichia on both surfaces. Pronotum large, slightly trapezoidal, two pairs of posteroangular setae; three pairs of posteromarginal setae. Mesonotum with median setae far from posterior margin; campaniform sensilla absent anteromedially. Metanotum without campaniform sensilla; median pair of setae far from anterior margin. Fore wing first vein with long gap in setal row, 4–8 basal and 2 distal setae; clavus with 3–5 veinal and one discal setae; posterior fringe cilia wavy. Prosternal ferna undivided; basantra membranous, without setae; prospinasternum broad transverse. Mesosternum with sternopleural sutures weak and not reaching anterior margin; endofurca with spinula. Metasternal endofurca usually without spinula. Tarsi 2-segmented. Tergites without ctenidia or craspeda; tergite VIII without comb; IX without anterior campaniform sensilla, MD setae well developed; X without median split. Sternites without craspeda or discal setae; III–VII with three pairs of posteromarginal setae, II with two pairs.
Male similar to female; tergite IX with pair of drepanae; sternites II or III–VIII each with many small pore plates.

Biological data

Apparently breeding on the leaves of various bamboo species including Arundinaria sp. [Poaceae].

Distribution data

Species of this genus are recorded from Thailand, southern China, and Japan.

Nomenclatural data

Yoshinothrips Kudo, 1985: 81. Type species Yoshinothrips pasekamui Kudo, 1985, by original designation.

Four species are described in this genus (ThripsWiki, 2020), of which three are known from China:

Relationship data

Thripidae sub-family Thripinae: this is a diverse group involving more than 230 genera. Yoshinothrips is one of a group of six southeast Asian genera in which the species are associated with bamboo, although the only other one recorded from China is Paithrips. It is considered a member of the Trichromothrips genus-group (Masumoto & Okajima, 2005).
