Generic diagnosis

Female macropterous. Head wider than long; maxillary palps 3-segmented; ocellar setae I present; without pigmented facets; setae III well-developed; six pairs of postocular setae. Antennae 8-segmented; segment I without paired dorso-apical setae, III and IV with forked sense-cones. Pronotum with two pairs of long posteroangular setae; three pairs of posteromarginal setae. Mesonotum with median pair of setae long and arising medially; anteromedian campaniform sensilla absent. Metanotum transversely reticulate; median pair of setae at anterior margin; campaniform sensilla absent. Fore wing first vein with long gap in setal row and two setae near apex; second vein with row of six or seven setae; clavus with five veinal and one discal setae; posteromarginal fringe cilia wavy. Prosternal ferna weak, divided; basantra membranous, without setae. Mesosternum with sternopleural sutures incomplete; endofurca with spinula. Metasternal endofurca usually with spinula. Tarsi 2-segmented. Tergites without ctenidia; not clearly divided from laterotergites; III–VIII with craspeda, on VIII with long microtrichia; lateral thirds of II–VIII with closely spaced rows of microtrichia; IX without anterior pair of campaniform sensilla or microtrichia (except at posterior margin); MD setae present; X without median split. Sternites II–VI with lobed craspeda bearing marginal microtrichia; no discal setae; sternites III–VII with three pairs of marginal setae, II with two pairs, S1 on VII in front of margin.
Male sternites IV–VI with wide dumbbell-shaped pore plates.

Biological data

Presumably leaf-feeding, and probably on young leaves as in the rather similar species of the genus Scirtothrips.

Distribution data

Each of the three species listed in this genus (ThripsWiki 2020) was described from India (Xei et al., 2016).

Nomenclatural data

Ajothrips Bhatti, 1967: 58. Type species Ajothrips karma Bhatti, 1967, by original designation.

Three species are listed in this genus (ThripsWiki, 2020), of which one is recorded from China:

karma Bhatti, 1967: 60.

Relationship data

Thripidae sub-family Thripinae: among the more than 230 genera in this group Ajothrips is apparently related to the Scirtothrips genus-group (Ng & Mound, 2015).
