Generic diagnosis

Female macropterous. Head wider than long, with transverse striations; maxillary palps 3-segmented; eyes without pigmented facets; ocellar setae I present; III arising on tangent between anterior margins of hind ocelli; two pairs of postocular setae. Antennae 8-segmented; segment I without paired dorso-apical setae; III and IV with forked sense cone; III–VI with microtrichia on both surfaces. Pronotum trapezoidal, with many transverse striae, without long setae, posterior margin with two or three pairs of setae. Mesonotum with median pair of setae far from posterior margin; anterior campaniform sensilla absent. Metanotum with longitudinal sculpture lines; median pair of setae at anterior margin; campaniform sensilla absent. Fore wing first vein with long gap in setal row; second vein without setae; clavus with three veinal and one discal setae; posteromarginal fringe cilia straight. Prosternal ferna slender and incomplete, curving forward medially; basantra membranous, without setae; prospinasternum slender and transverse. Meso and metasternal endofurca both with spinula. Tarsi 2-segmented. Tergites without ctenidia or craspeda, II–VII lateral thirds with closely spaced rows of small microtrichia, S1 setae arising close together; VIII with complete posteromarginal comb; IX without anterior campaniform sensilla, MD setae present; X without median split. Sternites II–VII with rows of discal microtrichia across median area; III–VII each with four pairs of marginal setae arising at margin; II with two pairs; posterior margins with fringe of long microtrichia.
Male similar to female; without large setae on tergite IX; sternites without pore plates.

Biological data

The members of this genus are presumably leaf-feeding, and the species from China was based on 19 females collected from the leaves of Loropetalum chinense [Hamamelidaceae].

Distribution data

The three species recognised in this genus are from Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia and Southeastern China, Jianxi Province.

Nomenclatural data

Siamothrips Okajima, 1990: 71. Type species Siamothrips argus Okajima, 1990, by monotypy.

Three species are recognised in this genus (ThripsWiki, 2020) of which one was described from China:

balteatus Wang & Tong, 2016: 130.

Relationship data

Thripidae sub-family Thripinae: this is a diverse group involving more than 230 genera. This is one of the 11 members of the Scirtothrips genus-group (Ng & Mound, 2015).
