Paraleyrodes naranjae Dozier

Nomenclature :

Paraleyrodes naranjae   Dozier, 1927: 854

Biology:  Pupal case with very broad white waxen filaments (arising from the dorsal compound  pores) that grow upward;  filaments cover a fringe with very broad white waxen filaments that curl downward; in abundance with the wooly whitefly (Aleurothrixus flococcus Quaintance).  Originally misidentified in Hawaii since the field & taxonomic characters of the pupal case are similar to Paraleyrodes pseudonaranjae Martin [Martin, 2001].   Currently Paraleyrodes pseudonaranjae Martin [Martin, Jon  2001], Paraleyrodes perseae Dozier & Paraleyrodes bondari Peracchi [Martin, Jon email message 2004] occur in Hawaii.  Paraleyrodes naranjae Dozier is known to occur in Puerto Rico only (Martin, email message 2004).

Host : Rutaceae: Citrus.

Distribution:  Neotropical:  Puerto Rico [Dozier, 1927: 854][Martin, 2001][S.E.L.].

Natural Enemies [Paulson & Kumashiro, 1985][Fulmek, 1943][Dozier, 1933]:  Nephaspis oculatus (Coleoptera, Coccinellidae);  Encarsia variegata  Howard (Hymenoptera, Aphelinidae).

Taxonomy  [Dozier, 1927: 853][Martin, 2001] difficult to separate unless adult males are available for comparison.

Larger cephalic & posterior four abdominal compound pores with an inner annulus (ring) of 6 simple facets from which arise about 6 rod shaped splines and an outer annulus of 14-15 facets.

First reduced pair of abdominal compound pores closer to the midline.   Anterior two pairs of abdominal compound pores each with 2-4 associated simple discoidal pores; greater than 50% the size of the larger compound pores .

Related species: Closely related to Paraleyrodes pseudonaranjae Martin [Martin, 2001] and Paraleyrodes goyobae Goeldi [Dozier, 1927: 853]
