Genus: Aleurocanthus Quaintance & Baker
Nomenclature [Martin 1999: 23-24; 2005] [Quaintance & Baker 1914]:
Aleurocanthus Quaintance & Baker 1914
Aleurocanthus Quaintance & Baker Cohic (1968)
Biology [Martin 1999: 23-24] [Quaintance & Baker1914]: Palaearctic genus with over 70 described species. Outline. puparial normally oval-shaped; color normally dark or blackish but may be light, often with sparsely distributed wax. Dorsum. Covered with stout glandular spines of various length with acute or blunt apices distributed from the submargin to a more complex disc array of the spines. The male puparia is much smaller than the female puparia (dimorphic).
Distribution [Martin 1999: 23-24] [Quaintance & Baker1914]: Worldwide, with most of the 65 species from South-East Asia and Africa.
Taxonomy [Martin 1999: 23-24] [Quaintance & Baker1914]: Outline. Oval-shaped, color normally dark or blackish but may be light in a few species; Margin. Dentate, not deflexed; Dorsum. Dorsal disc covered with glandular spines (usually paired in submargin, subdorsum and submedially) and of various length with acute, blunt, or flanged apices. Vasiform orifice usually elevated and the operculum completely covers the lingula. Color, pattern & length of the spines may determine species.
Natural Enemies [ Thompson & Simmonds 1964] [ Fulmek 1941 & 1943]: Scymnus sp. & pallidicollis Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae); Eretmocerus serius Silvestri (Hymenoptera: Chalcicoidea: Aphelinidae); Prospaltella clypealis Silvestri, P. divergens Silvestri and P. sp.
Similar Genera: Note that Binks-Moenen (1983) moved several African Aleurocanthus species into the Cohicaleyrodes genus. This is reflected in the list of species below since they possess the characteristic spines of the genus, Aleurocanthus.
Spines may be considered by some as homologous structures similar to the siphon-like tubes in Siphoninus and Asiothrixus antidesmae Takahashi.
Related to the Xenaleyrodes
[Martin 1999] except that the spines are submarginal only and the puparial
margin deflexed. The stout spines should not be confused with robust dorsal
disc setae (e.g. Aleurotuba).
