Generic diagnosis

Slender, brown or bicoloured Phlaeothripinae. Head with cheeks slightly constricted behind large eyes; postocular setae usually arise behind inner margin of eyes; stylets usually about one-third of head width apart, retracted to postocular setae. Antennae 8-segmented, III with 2 or 3 sense cones, IV with 3 or 4 (rarely 2). Pronotum with 5 pairs of capitate setae, notopleural sutures incomplete or complete. Prosternal basantra absent, mesopresternum transverse; metathoracic sternopleural sutures absent. Fore tarsal tooth usually not developed; fore wings weakly constricted medially, with or without duplicated cilia. Pelta usually longer than wide and bell-shaped; tergites II–VII with 2 pairs of wing-retaining setae, each posterior pair usually thicker than anterior pair; tergite IX with accessory setae between S1 and S2 almost as long as S1; tube with straight sides, slightly shorter than head. Male sternite VIII with or without pore plate.

Only four of the 76 species included in this genus are recorded from Australia (ThripsWiki, 2022).

Relationship data

This genus is possibly related to Hoplandrothrips, another species-rich genus of fungus-feeding species, although species of Hoplandrothrips commonly exhibit more extreme sexual dimorphism.

Distribution data

Most of the 76 described species in this genus are from the New World, particularly the Neotropics, with one species from Kenya, and about 10 species from southeast Asia and northern Australia (including Norfolk Island). Two of the four species listed above were described from Australia, but two of them were described from or recorded from other territories including the Solomon Islands, Indonesia and southern Japan.

Biological data

Members of this genus are fungus-feeding on dead branches and on dead leaves.
