Generic diagnosis

Medium sized, dark, macropterous Phlaeothripinae with short, hyaline setae on head and pronotum, abdominal lateral setae longer. Head about as long as wide, constricted at base behind convex genae; vertex coarsely reticulate laterally and on hind margin but smooth medially; postocular setae tiny; mouth-cone short and rounded; maxillary stylets retracted as far as postocular setae, close together, with a distinct maxillary bridge. Antennae 8-segmented; segment III with one outer sense cone, IV with 2 (1+1) sense cones; VIII constricted at base; sensorium on antennal segment II almost on basal half of segment. Pronotum wider than long, slightly trapezoidal, with two pairs of major setae developed but not long; notopleural sutures complete. Prosternal basantra sub-circular in females but much longer than wide in large males; ferna transverse; mesopresternum extended forwards medially; metathoracic sternopleural sutures present. Fore tarsal tooth present in both sexes. Fore wings not constricted medially, without duplicated cilia. Pelta bell-shaped, usually with small posterolateral wings; tergites II and VII each with only one pair of wing retaining setae, III‒VI each with two pairs; tergite IX setae S1 and S2 pointed, less than half length of tube. Male tergite IX setae S2 stouter than but not shorter than S1; sternite VIII apparently without pore plate.

Relationships

The remarkably well-developed and sexually dimorphic prosternal basantra are particularly unusual, but the species seems most likely to be derived from within the Phlaeothrips-lineage. Despite the position of the sensorium on antennal segment II, Okajima (1981) considered that this genus is not a member of the Plectrothripini, but is more closely related to Hoplothrips.

Biology

Recorded from the bark of dead Pinus silvestris trees, and presumably fungus-feeding.

Distribution

Recorded across Central Europe, south from Finland.

Nomenclature

Eurytrichothrips Priesner, 1920: 84. Type species Eurytrichothrips piniphilus Priesner, 1920 [synonym of Trichothrips affinis Reuter, 1899], by monotypy.

Only one species is placed in this genus (ThripsWiki, 2023).

Euro-Mediterranean species
