Generic diagnosis

Medium sized Phlaeothripinae-Haplothripini with head projecting between antennal bases. Head broader at posterior than anterior; with a large, elongate, inter-antennal projection; fore ocellus smaller than posterior pair; postocular setae small, acute. Maxillary stylets retracted to eyes, about one fifth of head width apart. Antennae 8-segmented, III with one sense cone, IV with 4 (or 3) sense cones; VIII narrower at base than VII at apex. Pronotum with almost no sculpture, 4 pairs of short, pointed major setae, anteromarginal setae small. Fore tarsus with small tooth. Fore wing narrrowed medially, with about 8 duplicated cilia; 3 short, pointed sub-basal setae with bases arranged in a triangle. Metanotum weakly reticulate medially. Prosternal basantra present; ferna large, transverse; mesopresternum transverse but narrowed medially; metathoracic sternopleural sutures long and fine. Pelta triangular, with weak sculpture; tergites II–VII each with 2 pairs of sigmoid setae, also 1 or 2 pairs of additional curved setae; tergite IX setae pointed, about 0.8 as long as tube. Male similar to female but smaller, head projection much smaller; tergite IX setae S2 shorter and stouter; sternites without pore plates.

Relationships

The single species in this genus shares most character states with various grass-living species of Haplothrips, however the presence of long, narrow, metathoracic sternopleural sutures is unusual, as is the prolongation of the head anterior margin.

Biology

Presumably closely associated with the widespread reedy grass, Phragmites australis [Poaceae].

Distribution

Described from England, where it was collected from imported reeds, this species is presumably widespread across Eurasia, having been reported from Turkey, Iran and Inner Mongolia (Dang & Qiao, 2013).
