Cape Arid to Bremer Bay, growing in clay and sandy-clay soils in seasonally moist woodlands and shrublands, flowering best in the season following summer fire.

A large flowered subspecies 200–500 mm high with a hairy leaf 120–250 mm long by 8–14 mm wide and up to three predominantly creamy-white flowers 70–140 mm across.
It is distinguished from the subsp. eminens, with which it co-occurs at the western edge of its distribution, by its generally larger flowers, usually longer labellum fringe segments and mostly more easterly distribution.
