Calochilus species have a slender, smooth leaf, a smooth flowering stem and up to 30 dull-coloured green, yellow and red-purple flowers with broad, incurved petals and sepals (giving them a cupped appearance) and a large, prominently hairy labellum. Flowers rarely stay open for more than a few days and it is unusual to see more than one or two open on a raceme at any one time.
