George Bentham in Flora Australiensis 6: 373 (1873) as Eriochilus dilatatus var. brevifolius

Distribution and Habitat

Kelmscott to Eurady Station, growing in gravelly, sandy-clay and clay soils in woodlands and shrublands. The subspecies does not require summer fire to flower.

Description

A late autumn-early winter flowering subspecies 40–200 mm high with a smooth, often pale red backed, wavy margined leaf 10–20 mm long by 4–6 mm wide and up to three white, dull green and red flowers 9–14 mm across.

Distinguishing Features

It is distinguished from the similar Crinkle-leaved Bunny Orchid (Eriochilus dilatatus subsp. undulatus) by its smaller leaf which is usually green above and pale red or pale red marked below. It also has a generally shorter stature, a fleshy flower stem that is often tinged pale red and a generally later flowering period.
