Kalbarri to Israelite Bay, growing in sandy, sandy-clay and lateritic soils in forests, woodlands and shrublands, flowering best in the season following summer fire. The species is also found in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia.

A common species 300–1200 mm high with a smooth tubular leaf 200–1000 mm long by 4–15 mm wide and up to 100 greenish- yellow to purplish-black flowers 10–15 mm across.
It is distinguished from the related Inland Leek Orchid (Prasophyllum macrotys) by its usually lighter colouration, more widely opening flowers and south-westerly distribution.
