Ravensthorpe to Balladonia, growing in sandy-clay and clay soils in woodlands and shrublands. The species is particularly common in shallow soil pockets on inland granite outcrops.

An inland species 80–100 mm (rarely to 170 mm) high with a basal rosette of leaves 30–40 mm across, one or two cauline leaves and one (rarely two) small, nodding, dark green or dark brown and white flowers 5–8 mm across. Flowers are green when they first open but turn dark brown as they mature.

It is distinguished from members of the related Pterostylis nana complex by its fleshy labellum.
