A common species 50–400 mm high with three to 12 cauline leaves 20–40 mm long by 4–7 mm wide and up to 10 fleshy, semi translucent, reddish-brown (more rarely green) and white flowers 12–18 mm across. The type form of Pterostylis sanguinea most closely matches Crowded Banded Greenhood (P. atrosanguinea) in Western Australia and what we have been calling P. sanguinea may be an undescribed species.
It is distinguished from the closely related Crowded Banded Greenhood (Pterostylis atrosanguinea) by its variably coloured reddish-brown or green, smaller, usually more widely spaced flowers.
