The Acari are arachnids: arthropods with four pairs of legs in the adult (some immature mites have only 3 pairs) and only 2 pairs of feeding appendages, the chelicerae (clawed) and pedipalps. The Arachnids are a predominantly terrestrial group, but there are many water mites (Acari). Approximately 25 families of aquatic mites are recognised from Australia.
