Code KG109999

Class Gastropoda: Subclass Prosobranchia: Order Diotocardia (= Archaeogastropoda).

Moderately large, tropical or subtropical prosobranch snails with turbinate shells. Found in fresh and brackish water streams or rivers throughout coastal northern Australia. Two genera and five species occur in freshwater. All occur widely in the islands to Australia's north.

Neritid shells show a great variety of often bright colours and patterns, both internally and externally, and shell morphology can vary according to microhabitat (river flow, substrate etc.). Isolated specimens may be found near the shores of lakes provided the water is sufficiently agitated.
