Class Gastropoda: Subclass Prosobranchia: Order Monotocardia.

The single genus, Gabbia , is represented in Australia by one definitive species, G. australis , but the family is in need of revision.

G. australis inhabits fresh to slightly saline water with slow or no flow and some weed cover. Backwaters and billabongs are particularly favoured. The distribution covers eastern inland and coastal areas, and northern regions of Australia. The species is common over most of NSW north of Sydney. It is absent from Tasmania.
