Class Gastropoda: Subclass Prosobranchia: Order Monotocardia.

A cosmopolitan family of coastal marine, terrestrial and freshwater snails. The Australian freshwater component comprises a few but uncertain number of species associated with freshwater seepages. The only described species, Austroassiminea lethea (Solem et al ., 1982), is known only from a far south-western Western Australian freshwater seepages and is considered to be rare and endangered.

The family includes (in the subfamily Omphalotropinae) terrestrial snails inhabiting forest litter in Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands.
