Larval copepods, or nauplii, may sometimes be mistaken for mites because of their small size and reduced number of appendages (1st antennae, 2nd antennae, mandibles). Nauplii may be distinguished from mites by the following characters: only one eye in the middle of the 'head'; no claws at the tips of their appendages; no chelicerae; appendages biramous.
