Tartarothyadinae

MM059999

The Hydryphantidae is a family of water mites in the superfamily Hydryphantoidea. In Australia there are 9 genera divided into 7 subfamilies.

The subfamily Tartarothyadinae is represented in Australia by the genus Tartarothyas (1 sp., Vic)). Harvey (1998) reports an undescribed species from south-western Australia.

Tartarothyas can be differentiated from other hydryphantids by this combination of characters: swimming setae are absent, lateral eyes are not in eye-capsules.

Tartarothyasspecies occur in stream sediments.
