Thyadinae

MM059999

The Hydryphantidae is a family of water mites in the superfamily Hydryphantoidea. In Australia there are 9 genera divided into 7 subfamilies.

The subfamily Thyadinae is represented in Australia by two genera: Notopansisus (1 sp., Tas) and Austrotrombella (1 sp., SA). Thyadines can be differentiated from other hydryphantids by this combination of characters: swimming setae are absent, lateral eyes are in capsules, body is not obviously elongate.

Thyadine species can be found in interstitial stream sediments (Notopanisus) or the wet margins of swamps (Austrotrombella).
