Tiphyinae

MM179999

The Pionidae is a family of water mites in the superfamily Hygrobatoidea. In Australia there are four genera in three subfamilies.

The subfamily Tiphyinae is represented by two genera: Acercella (2 spp., Vic, WA and other records from Qld (HCP)) and Australotiphys (3 spp., Qld, NSW, WA, NT). The subfamily is diagnosed by the presence of modifications in the male: one or more of the distal three segments of legs IV have either enlarged setae or terminal processes.

Tiphyines are found primarily in standing waters, but Australotiphys species occasionally occur in pools.
