Code QE019999

A family of mayflies, represented in Australia by a single species, Ameletoides lacusalbinae . The nymphs are slender and streamlined, and the gills single not bifid. The first abdominal gill is plate-like and covers the other gills, and there are small gills on the maxillae. The antennae are shorter than the head (cf. Baetidae).

The one Australian genus is widespread in cool, high altitude streams in south eastern mainland Australia and Tasmania and from some lakes in Kosciusko region.

There are records from below the treeline in forested streams, where their distribution may be restricted by introduced trout. Campbell (1985, 1986) provides dietary and life history information.
