(was Ephemerellidae)

Code QE079999

A gondwanan family of mayflies, until recently treated as part of the mainly Holarctic family Ephemerellidae. A single Australian species, Austremerella picta , previously Ephemerellina (Austremerella) picta , was described from a small, stony stream in Lamington National Park in southern Queensland. The distribution is now known to extend to north of Brisbane and to northern NSW where it occurs in several clean streams of the New England Tableland.

Nymphs heavily sclerotised, with a diagnostic prominent double row of blunt spines dorsally on the abdomen. Gills on abdominal segments 2-6. The dorsal portion of each gill plate-like and the ventral portion with two rows of overlapping rows.
