Code QH619999Large, predatory waterbugs with raptorial forelegs and a short or long terminal respiratory siphon. Some genera (subfamily Nepinae) look remarkably scorpion-like and are commonly called water scorpions. Others (Ranatrinae) are more elongate and stick-like. Most species live among water weeds or in mud in ponds, lakes and streams but a few Ranatrinae are found under rocks in flowing water. The respiratory siphon is alarming but harmless, but the foreleg grip is strong and most species can inflict a painful bite. Reference: Carver, M., Gross, G.F. and Woodward, T.E.
